Dear visitors to the Ljubljana City Theatre!
I know it would make no sense to dwell on the state of the world in the introduction. We are witnessing a global political crime of the most horrifying proportions, an invasion of greed and bizarre madness; we are witnessing the bankruptcy of all ethics… In the face of all this, even qualified experts and professional analysts are at a loss for words and breath.
But I also know that, in the midst of this wounded world of ours, art still lives on. And with it, theatre. Good, old, courageous, defiant, indestructible theatre.
Edward Bond, one of the playwrights featured in the 2026/2027 season, said: “I think there is no world without theatre.”
What do we offer? What do we present? A kind of freedom, certainly. And with it, the opportunity to behold the images that are not the product of vulgar literalism. A chance to encounter the unfamiliar and expand one’s own imagination. We offer a spiritual refuge. A shelter. Or an airfield. We offer closeness.
We have called the 2026/2027 season "UP CLOSE."
Without a shred of doubt, theatre is a place of closeness. A breath meets a breath, a gaze meets a gaze, a thought meets a thought… In fact, theatre is – up close. In moments of general distraction, it is precisely the theatre that can concentrate a fleeting moment into a detail worthy of attention. The new Ljubljana City Theatre's season will, with the help of brilliant dramatic masterpieces, explore precisely these details—the building blocks of a restless, fragile, contradictory life. A close-up view is often seen through the prism of humour and satire. Why? Because through the prism of comedy, certain details become particularly clear. We believe there are no simple or unequivocal answers to complex questions. We also believe that understanding and responsibility arise spontaneously—without coercion or dictate.
You are cordially invited to come closer!
To stories. To others. To oneself.
