As Long as We Die in an Orderly Way
It’s raining cats and dogs. There is a flood risk and the ceremonial opening of a luxury restaurant is cancelled. In the restaurant, there are Janko, its owner, his wife whom he is currently divorcing, and his new partner. Later on, they are joined by a girl who has recently been dumped by Janko’s son, because he is leaving for the USA. Meanwhile, Janko’s father is in the hospital saying goodbye to life. Night, rain and cold also fill their hearts. This is a play about saying goodbye, a drama on leaving, on putting known things behind, which is always painful and associated with insecurity

Ivor Martinić sets to ask questions whether we have the right to make a change, although we may hurt our dearest and nearest.
But many incidents and words said in this night are above all comic. The main protagonist Janko is melancholic – and funny. He is also scared – and as such pitiful. We witness a story about human weaknesses, fragile relationships and helplessness. From living in fear to fearing changes – the inevitable ones (children separate from parents, growing old, death) and those that we make ourselves (a new relationship, moving abroad). Ivor Martinić sets to ask questions whether we have the right to make a change, although we may hurt our dearest and nearest. The pain of Martinić’s characters is vivid and overwhelming, it touches one’s heart. But it also inspires hope and gives power. As well as humour and self-deprecating humour.
Ivo Martinić (1984) is one of the most propulsive Croatian playwrights of the younger generation. For the past few years he has been living in Barcelona.
